About the area
A city that residents started with a petition
The city’s history page says Centennial is in Arapahoe County, south of Denver, and became an official city on February 7, 2001. Residents formed it because they wanted greater local control over how taxes were spent and how services were provided. The timeline on that page begins in 1998, when a pancake breakfast sparked the idea of incorporation, and a group called the Arapahoe Citizens for Self-Determination quickly gathered thousands of petition signatures.
The page says the Colorado Supreme Court cleared the way in 2000 and that voters approved forming the city. In 2008 voters approved a home rule charter, which the city says strengthened local decision-making. It also says Centennial is recognized for its contract-based model of government. Centennial Center Park opened in 2012 as the city’s first signature park.
The city’s neighborhoods page says the neighborhoods came together to help form the city. It says the Littleton Public Schools and the Cherry Creek School District serve Centennial residents, and it links to a list of neighborhood associations and a map of homeowner associations. It also links to a Special Districts Map, where you can look up your fire, school, and water district.
For everyday services, the first step is to find out which provider or district serves your address. The city says it does not provide trash pickup, and its Special Districts Map points you to the fire, school, and water district for a given home. The sections below follow the city’s own pages, and every source is linked at the bottom so you can check it.
Good to know
Trash, dumpsters, and short-term rentals in Centennial
The city’s recycling page starts with one plain sentence: the city does not provide trash or recycling pickup. Your trash provider may offer recycling as part of your service, so ask your provider. The city adds that Colorado law bans throwing away electronics such as TVs and computers in the trash, and that the city does not offer year-round electronics recycling. It generally hosts an electronics recycling event each spring, and some neighborhood associations host their own.
Dumpsters have a specific rule. The city says dumpsters are not allowed on public residential streets except for community or neighborhood cleanup and maintenance projects, or for groups of five or more residents. Residential dumpster permits may be issued to incorporated homeowner, civic, or community associations, to general improvement districts, and to groups of five or more residents of the same subdivision. A single household with a driveway should ask the city before ordering a dumpster for the street.
For Christmas trees, the city partners each winter with two park and recreation districts to give residents a place to drop them off, and it asks you to check its page in December for dates.
The short-term rental page covers a rule that matters for owners who rent. The city says every short-term rental, a stay of 1 to 29 days, must have an active license from the city. It sets an occupancy limit of 2 renters per bedroom with 8 as the property maximum, and it requires two off-street parking spaces for renters. Neighbors next door and across the street must receive an owner contact handout, and a neighborly renter rules sheet must be posted near the front door.
