About the area
From a trading post to Commerce Town to Commerce City
The city’s history page begins with the Indigenous peoples who lived on the Front Range for thousands of years. It says that in 1859 John D. “Colonel Jack” Henderson built a ranch, trading post, and hotel on Henderson Island in the South Platte River, selling meat and provisions to gold seekers. The page calls it the first permanent settlement in the South Platte River Valley between two other posts, and says the island is now the site of the Adams County Regional Park and Fairgrounds.
Among the first establishments in the modern city were cemeteries, and the page names Riverside Cemetery, founded in 1876, and Rose Hill Cemetery, established in 1892. Several small towns rose and faded. Derby began as a railroad station in 1887, Irondale was settled in 1889 around a foundry, and Adams City was laid out in 1903. Until the late 1920s the land was farms, wheat fields, dairies, and pig farms, and then industry moved in. The Rocky Mountain Arsenal was founded in 1942 just east of the growing community.
On July 8, 1952, area residents voted 251 to 24 to incorporate Commerce Town, which included neighborhoods such as Rose Hill and southern Adams City. The town annexed part of Derby in 1962, which grew its population more than fourfold and earned it city status, and the name became Commerce City. By 1970 its home rule charter was in effect, with a council-manager form of government.
The city’s Derby Downtown District page calls Derby, known to locals as “Big D,” one of the original railroad towns on the Front Range. It says most original buildings there date from the 1950s through the 1970s, and that a few at the core are a style of architecture the city calls “googie.” An older neighborhood like that often has homes with decades of wear, and a deep clean can reset them.
Good to know
The city trash program, bulk pickup, and rentals in Commerce City
Commerce City runs a citywide program with one hauler. The city’s trash and recycling page says Republic Services is the citywide hauler and that service is provided at no additional cost for all single-family homes and duplexes, while service varies for other housing types. Each home should have two 95-gallon carts: one for trash, picked up weekly, and one for recycling, picked up every other week.
For a move or a clean-out, the bulk rules are the useful part. The city says large-item pickup is included: residents can schedule one bulk pickup per quarter at no extra charge for items that do not fit in the trash cart, and a citywide bulk item day is held once a year. The program also includes four free days a year at the Tower Landfill, free green yard waste drop-off events, and Neighborhood Curbside Cleanup Days. A schedule and a map are on the city’s page.
The page also lists partner events open to residents, such as household hazardous waste events, a voucher program for hazardous waste, paint drop-off, and a pharmaceutical take-back program. Dates change each year, so check the page.
The short-term rental page says that as of January 1, 2025, short-term rentals are legally permitted within the city, subject to zoning and licensing. A rental is a stay of fewer than 30 days in a single-family detached home or a duplex, and the owner must name a responsible agent who can respond to complaints at any hour.
