About the area
From a gold pan on Ralston Creek to Olde Town
The city’s history pages start in 1850, when a wagon train crossed the Platte River and Lewis Ralston dipped his gold pan in an unnamed mountain stream. The city says the Colorado Historical Society officially recognized in 1995 that Colorado’s first gold discovery happened in present-day Arvada. By 1860 more than thirty land claims had been filed in the valley, and the city says that farmers who came for gold stayed to raise wheat, corn, plums, and celery. At one time Arvada was known as the “celery capital of the world.”
In 1863 Benjamin Franklin Wadsworth bought a land claim and platted a town of nine square blocks. His wife, Mary Ann, named the town Arvada after her brother-in-law, Hiram Arvada Haskins. The formal notice of the town was posted on December 1, 1870. Voters approved incorporation on the third try, 159 to 62, and the Articles of Incorporation were filed in 1904. Arvada became a city on November 1, 1951.
Growth came in waves. The city’s page says that when World War II ended, Arvada had about 1,500 people and a housing boom followed, with houses built north of Ralston Road. Today the city lists the Arvada Downtown Historic District, known as Olde Town, which holds everything from single-family houses to shops and offices. It also lists the Reno Park Addition and the Stocke-Walter Addition as historic single-family neighborhoods. The Stocke Addition was platted in 1904 and the Walter subdivision in 1920.
The city’s about page says Arvada uses a council and manager form of government, and that public schools are run by Jefferson County Public Schools. A house in an older neighborhood often has original floors, tile, and fixtures, and a cleaning plan can pick the standard, deep, or premium deep level to match.
Good to know
The city waste program, bulky items, and rentals in Arvada
Arvada runs its own waste hauling program. The city’s Recycling and Trash page says the city partners with Republic Services and offers four service levels: three with a trash cart in 95, 65, or 35 gallons plus a 95-gallon recycling cart, and a minimum service with no cart, where you choose your own hauler. The charges are billed with the water bill, and the city page has the current rates, so this page does not repeat them.
Bulky items have a place in the program. The city says its bulky item and leaf recycling drop-off events are part of the minimum services and are open to all Arvada residents. A bulky item pickup is also listed as an extra service, and a roll-off dumpster can be arranged through Republic Services. For hazardous waste, the city links to the Rooney Road household hazardous waste recycling site.
The city’s rule for containers matters on cleaning day. Under Arvada Municipal Code Chapter 18, section 18-517, trash and recycling containers must be stored behind the front plane of a residence when not out for collection. Containers go out by 7 a.m. on collection day, close to the curb without blocking the sidewalk, and may not sit at the curb longer than 24 consecutive hours a week.
The page also answers a question movers ask: what to do about service when you sell a house and move out. Read that answer on the city page and call the city’s number there to end service.
On short-term rentals, the city’s page says a unit rented for fewer than 30 nights, with a minimum of 2 nights, needs both a short-term rental permit and a business license. It also says the city updated its ordinance in 2026. Read the page before you list a property.
