Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products for Denver Metro Homes

We built an eco-friendly product line, available on request for $15 per visit. The reason was simple: we are in other people's homes every day, and we wanted to know that what we were using was safe for everyone living there.

Why We Switched in the First Place

When we started Sparkles-N-Shine Cleaning, we used conventional cleaning products because that is what most cleaning companies use. They are widely available, they work, and they are what the industry defaults to.

What changed was a conversation with a client who had a toddler and a dog. She was interested in hiring us but worried about the residue conventional products leave behind, especially on floors and lower surfaces. Her toddler was crawling. Her dog put her face on everything. She wanted to know what we were using and whether it was actually safe after the clean.

We looked into it. The more we learned, the more we realized that many of the standard products we were using contained chemicals we did not fully understand, and that some of them had real health implications for children, pets, and people with sensitivities. We decided to make the switch and test eco-friendly alternatives on our own homes first.

They worked. They did not leave behind the chemical smell that had always just been normal to us. The homes smelled clean rather than smelling like cleaning products. We kept them as our eco-friendly option, available on request.

What "Eco-Friendly" Actually Means

The term "eco-friendly" gets used loosely, so it is worth being specific about what we mean. For us, a product qualifies if it meets these criteria:

  • Plant-based or naturally derived ingredients, not petroleum-based
  • Biodegradable formula that breaks down safely after rinsing
  • Free from harsh synthetic fragrances, dyes, and preservatives
  • No ammonia, chlorine bleach, or phosphates in the main formula
  • Third-party certifications like EPA Safer Choice, EWG Verified, or USDA Biobased where available
  • Concentrated formulas that reduce plastic waste per clean

No product is perfect. Even natural ingredients can cause reactions in some people. What we are after is a meaningful reduction in the chemical load inside the homes we clean, not just a label that sounds good on a bottle.

What We Use on an Eco-Friendly Clean

All-Purpose Surfaces

For countertops, appliance exteriors, cabinet fronts, and general surfaces, we use a plant-based all-purpose cleaner that cuts grease and lifts residue without leaving behind a film. We like concentrated versions because they reduce the amount of packaging that ends up in the trash. A few ounces diluted in water handles everything from a kitchen countertop to a bathroom vanity.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms require a different level of disinfection, and this is where we are most deliberate. We use EPA Safer Choice-listed disinfectants for toilet surfaces, and a separate hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner for the tub and shower walls. Hydrogen peroxide is a naturally occurring compound. It breaks down into water and oxygen. It is effective against mold, mildew, and bacteria without the fumes that come from bleach-based products.

For grout, we use a paste with baking soda and a small amount of castile soap applied with a brush. It is not glamorous, but it works and it does not require ventilating the room while it sets.

Glass and Mirrors

We use a vinegar-based glass cleaner for mirrors and windows. It leaves a streak-free finish without any synthetic chemicals. Some clients notice a brief vinegar smell when we use it, but it dissipates within minutes. We pair it with high-quality microfiber cloths that lift particles without scratching.

Floors

For hard floors, we use a plant-based floor cleaner diluted in warm water. For carpet, we spot-treat with a natural enzyme-based cleaner that breaks down stains at the molecular level without chemical odors or residue. Enzyme cleaners are especially good for pet stains because they neutralize the odor compounds rather than just masking them.

Kitchen Degreasing

Kitchen grease requires real cleaning power. We use a citrus-based degreaser for stovetops, oven interiors, and range hood vents. Citrus solvents (usually derived from orange or lemon peel oil) cut through baked-on grease effectively and smell far better than the harsh industrial degreasers we used to rely on.

What We Avoid and Why

There are several common cleaning ingredients our eco-friendly line leaves out. We are not saying these products are dangerous in all circumstances, but they are not what we want in the homes of our clients.

  • Chlorine bleachEffective but produces chlorine gas when it contacts ammonia or acidic cleaners. The fumes can irritate lungs, and residue on surfaces can be absorbed through skin contact. We only use it in specific circumstances where no alternative works and ventilation is adequate.
  • AmmoniaCommon in glass cleaners and general disinfectants. Irritating to eyes and respiratory systems, especially for people with asthma. We replaced it with vinegar-based and plant-derived alternatives that work just as well.
  • Synthetic fragrancesThe term "fragrance" on a label can legally hide dozens of undisclosed chemicals. Some of these are known irritants or allergens. We choose fragrance-free or products scented only with essential oils.
  • PhosphatesUsed in some dish soaps and cleaning products. They contribute to water pollution by feeding algae blooms in rivers and lakes. Easy to avoid since many brands have removed them.
  • Phthalates and parabensCommon in some cleaning and personal care products as preservatives or to make fragrance last longer. Associated with endocrine disruption. We read ingredient labels and avoid them.

What About Disinfection?

This is the most common concern we hear when clients ask about our eco-friendly products. People want to know if their bathrooms and kitchens are actually being disinfected, not just cleaned.

The answer is yes. True disinfection requires a product that kills a specific percentage of pathogens and holds EPA registration. There are eco-friendly products that meet this standard, including hydrogen peroxide-based disinfectants and certain thymol-based products (thymol is derived from thyme oil) that are registered with the EPA and proven effective against common household bacteria and viruses.

We use these in bathrooms and kitchens on every eco-friendly clean. If a client wants a higher level of disinfection, such as after an illness in the home, we offer a disinfectant cleaning service that applies hospital-grade treatment to high-touch surfaces throughout the home.

The Eco-Friendly Upgrade Option

Eco-friendly products are available on request as an add-on to any service, for $15 per visit. When you choose it, we use eco-friendly products across every surface and every product category without exception, including the degreaser and the disinfectant.

This is especially popular with families who have newborns or infants, households with pets that lick floors and surfaces, people who have chemical sensitivities or asthma, and clients who simply prefer to minimize synthetic chemicals in their home as a lifestyle choice.

Tips for Keeping It Green Between Professional Cleans

If you want to maintain an eco-friendly home between our visits, here are the swaps we recommend to clients:

  • Replace paper towels with washable microfiber cloths for most cleaning tasks
  • Use a spray bottle of diluted white vinegar for quick countertop wipes
  • Clean drains monthly with baking soda followed by vinegar and hot water
  • Use castile soap (like Dr. Bronner's) diluted in water for light bathroom cleaning
  • Ventilate rooms after cleaning even with natural products, especially if you used any essential oil-based sprays
  • Check the EWG Healthy Living app when buying store cleaners. It grades product safety on a clear scale.
  • Avoid mixing any cleaners, even natural ones, since some natural ingredients react badly with each other

Our Bottom Line on Eco-Friendly Cleaning

We did not build our eco-friendly line to be trendy. We built it because we are inside homes with children, pets, and people with health conditions, and we wanted to be confident in what we were leaving behind. The products in that line are gentler on surfaces, safer for the people who live in the homes we clean, and easier on us as the people using them.

If you have questions about specific products we use, or if you have sensitivities we should know about before your clean, just let us know when you request a quote. We are always happy to talk through it.
